The 5 Google Signals you need to know for Effective Search Engine Rankings

We all want to be top of the pops when it comes to search engine rankings, especially when it comes to hitting the big time on Google. That’s the kind of spotlight we’d all like to own, but with it comes hard work and well-rounded knowledge on how to get there in the first place.

Figuring out how to organically gain traction can be a bit of a mystery for some. But, we’re a fan of dismantling puzzles and putting them plain and simple. So in this article, we’ve boiled down your must-do steps for dominating Google into five signals you need to master. Use these as a checklist and stepping stones to success, and you’ll find yourself ahead of your competition.

These are the definitive factors that rank you on Google

1. Quality content: This is highly important and applies to all of your blogs and articles but also extends to the general content on all of your pages. Keyword research is absolutely essential, and you need to ensure the right phrases are utilising in your headings, body and metadata. Combined, these factors turn your ordinary piece or page into a highly authoritative, indexable creation in the eyes of Google.

These keywords are also what Google is looking for to deliver your page to your audience. Think of sentimentality – if you have a reason to be shown in front of your biggest target audiences, then Google will do just that. But you have to give those bots a reason to take action like this, and that means understanding all of the on-page SEO components reflected on each of your URLs.

However, we cannot urge you enough not to go nuts and stuff keywords here, there and everywhere. Gone are the days where this was acceptable and commonplace, and Google will quickly put you in the Naughty Corner if you do this.

What users want – at the end of the day – is high-quality content that answers their questions and solves their problems. As a business, Google wants to fulfill this need for users, so it’s only going to show content that’s able to meet each of these requirements.

Ultimately what determines a quality within content comes down to its uniqueness, valuable takeaways, relevance, links and the number of links associated (both on-page and off-page) with that particular URL. The more authority you garner through all of this, the more those nifty bots at Google will want to put you prime and centre in those search results pages.

2. Backlinks: How do you make your page appear reputable in the eyes of a search engine? Make sure you have a healthy and up-to-date portfolio of reputable websites linking back to your content. This can be achieved naturally by simply producing high-quality content and sharing the heck out of it through social media channels, but you want to be more proactive than that. Reach out to websites in your niche or industry and ask to guest blog, AKA supply your content for free in return for a byline and a backlink. Look for sites that have weekly or monthly roundups like ‘The five best article on XXX this month’ and get your content in front of them.

A simple search on Google will show you a list of opportunities already waiting for you.

Look for resources pages and try and have your site listed there. But never, ever pay for backlinks. Google will slap you back down the rankings so fast your head will spin. What you want is backlinks from websites that have a strong Domain Authority (DA) score, which can be determined through a range of online tools and platforms like Ahrefs. When in doubt, try to establish quality relationships with other publications to try and help each other out in this aspect.

3. Page speed: This is not only important for the user experience (slow loading websites will quickly be closed down), it is important for Google as well. They want to know they are connecting searches to sites with positive user experience and your site speed will be calculated in its algorithm. This was extended to include mobile phones in 2018, which is now a massive part of the ranking equation, so make sure your user experience is also optimised for these mobile devices.

4. Security: This has been a major crackdown by Google and its commitment to delivering its users to safe and reputable sources. Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) is absolutely essential in the modern-day and age, and Google is far more likely to connect its searchers to HTTPS sites rather than standard HTTP sites.

But worse than this, if your page is not secure, then Google is going to dob you in, and users are going to get a warning that your page is ‘Not Secure’. That’s going to send your audience running for the hills, hurting your bounce rate and limiting your ability to make sales or conversions. Yikes.

Search intent: You need to have content that matches the stage of the sales journey your customers are on. For straight sales, articles on specific products may resonate with your interested audience. For those still in the consideration phase, this is essentially learning mode, so you want to offer them advice and tips to help nurture them. This lets them make up their own mind through valuable, actionable content that gives them peace of mind and confidence that you’re a credible authority. This is where how-to articles and tips/tricks-type content does well.

Note: Always consider longtail key phrases here like “how to xx”, “what is the best XX” and other popular terms people will be typing into Google when searching. If you’re not sure how to get started, type your topic into Google to see what questions people are currently asking about your topic (People Also Ask)

Once you’ve got your hand in all of these ranking factors, you’re on your way to definitively collect your place on Google’s podium. But it does take hard work and persistence, and only those who abide by the rules and work on quality-focused efforts really reap the benefits.
