Include your keywords
This is standard practice when it comes to SEO. Your keywords are everything, so you need to make sure they are a part of your URL. When Google is choosing who to trust enough to put on their first page, they skip past websites whose URL’s don’t reflect the content on the page. Get in the habit of formulating your URL around your keyword/s to ensure each one is well-placed to be recognised not only by the customer but the search engine too.
Keep it simple
Some website platforms create automatic URL’s for their users, comprised mostly of random letters, numbers and symbols. In other words, it’s a total mess. No customer will be able to look at the URL and know whether they are where they want to be on your site or not. Similarly, it gives no indication to Google what exactly you’re offering. Even though you might think the ‘simple’ solution is leaving it how it is and saving your own time by using the automatic URL, it’s actually much simpler in the long run to fix it as soon as possible.
Make a structure
This leads on from the last point and, although it takes some careful planning, you’ll be thankful you did it in the long run. A URL structure will keep your website organised and easy to digest. If you’re an online store selling women’s clothing, for example, you’ll likely want to sort your pages by category of item. By structuring your URL to include ‘/category/womens-pants’, ‘/category/womens-tops’ and so on, the customer will have a clear understanding of where they are on your site as soon as they look at it. And again, the clearer and more relevant your URL is, the better chance you’ll have at being ranked by Google.
Submit your URL’s to search engines
Once you’ve done all this hard word, you’ll of course want to make sure that it gets recognised by search engines. Create a sitemap of all the URL’s you ideally want to rank in people’s searches. Compile this list and submit it to your preferred search engines to help them find your site more easily – exactly what you wanted!
